Frost Mage AoE Leveling — AoE Leveling · WoW Classic
Frost mages level fastest in Classic by gathering whole packs of melee enemies and killing them together under Blizzard. Improved Blizzard slows everything inside it, Permafrost makes the slow last, and Frost Nova and Cone of Cold hold the pack in place while it dies. From level 22 to 60 the same pull works on beasts, murlocs and humanoids across the world.
No other Classic class can pull and kill six to ten enemies at once while taking almost no damage. The technique trades risk for speed: a well-run pull is several times faster than single kills, a bad one is a death.
Strengths
- Kills many enemies at once: the fastest open-world leveling in Classic
- Barely needs gear: the frost spells do the work
- Ice Block and Blink save a pull that goes wrong
Weaknesses
- Mana-hungry: drinking between pulls is part of the rhythm
- Casters and ranged enemies don't follow you into the Blizzard
- Needs practice: misjudged pulls are deadly

Key talents

Improved Blizzard · Frost, up to 3
Makes Blizzard chill everything it hits, so the pack walks through it slowly: the heart of the technique.
Adds a chill effect to your Blizzard spell. This effect lowers the target's movement speed by 65%. Lasts 1.5 sec.

Permafrost · Frost, up to 3
Lengthens chill effects, so the slow from Blizzard and Cone of Cold lasts until the next tick.
Increases the duration of your Chill effects by 3 secs and reduces the target's speed by an additional 10%.

Improved Frost Nova · Frost, up to 2
Frost Nova comes back sooner: a second Nova in the same pull.
Reduces the cooldown of your Frost Nova spell by 4 sec.

Arctic Reach · Frost, up to 2
Longer Blizzard range; wider Frost Nova and Cone of Cold.
Increases the range of your Frostbolt and Blizzard spells and the radius of your Frost Nova and Cone of Cold spells by 20%.

Frost Channeling · Frost, up to 3
Cheaper frost spells that draw less threat: longer pulls.
Reduces the mana cost of your Frost spells by 15% and reduces the threat caused by your Frost spells by 30%.

Improved Cone of Cold · Frost, up to 3
More damage on the finishing Cones.
Increases the damage dealt by your Cone of Cold spell by 35%.

Ice Barrier · Frost, up to 1
Absorbs the hits from enemies that reach you.
Instantly shields you, absorbing 454 damage. Lasts 1 min. While the shield holds, spells will not be interrupted.

Ice Block · Frost, up to 1
The way out when a pull goes wrong.
You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 sec, but during that time you cannot attack, move or cast spells.

Cold Snap · Frost, up to 1
Resets Frost Nova and Cone of Cold for a second round.
When activated, this spell finishes the cooldown on all of your Frost spells.

Arcane Concentration · Arcane, up to 5
Free spells when it triggers during long Blizzard channels.
Gives you a 10% chance of entering a Clearcasting state after any damage spell hits a target. The Clearcasting state reduces the mana cost of your next damage spell by 100%.
Abilities

Blizzard · level 20, 6 ranks
The main damage: channel it over the frozen or slowed pack.
Ice shards pelt the target area doing 1192 Frost damage over 8 sec.

Frost Nova · level 10, 4 ranks
Roots the pack once it has bunched up behind you.
Blasts enemies near the caster for 73 to 81 Frost damage and freezes them in place for up to 8 sec. Damage caused may interrupt the effect.

Cone of Cold · level 26, 5 ranks
Slows and damages enemies that break out of the Nova.
Targets in a cone in front of the caster take 338 to 368 Frost damage and are slowed by 50% for 8 sec.

Arcane Explosion · level 14, 6 ranks
Finishes enemies around you with little health left.
Causes an explosion of arcane magic around the caster, causing 249 to 269 Arcane damage to all targets within 10 yards.

Ice Barrier · talent, 4 ranks
Cast before the pull, recast between Novas.
Instantly shields you, absorbing 826 damage. Lasts 1 min. While the shield holds, spells will not be interrupted.

Ice Block · talent
Emergency: immune for a few seconds while cooldowns come back.
You become encased in a block of ice, protecting you from all physical attacks and spells for 10 sec, but during that time you cannot attack, move or cast spells.

Cold Snap · talent
Resets Frost Nova and Cone of Cold.
When activated, this spell finishes the cooldown on all of your Frost spells.

Blink · level 20
Gets you out of melee range after a Nova.
Teleports the caster 20 yards forward, unless something is in the way. Also frees the caster from stuns and bonds.

Evocation · level 20
Restores mana on a long pull or a bad respawn.
While channeling this spell, your mana regeneration is active and increased by 1500%. Lasts 8 sec.

Frost Armor · level 1, 3 ranks
Slows enemies that hit you; Ice Armor replaces it at 30.
Increases Armor by 200. If an enemy strikes the caster, they may have their movement slowed by 30% and the time between their attacks increased by 25% for 5 sec. Only one type of Armor spell can be active on the Mage at any time. Lasts 30 min.

Conjure Water · level 4, 7 ranks
Drink between pulls.
Conjures 10 bottles of crystal water, providing the mage and his allies with something to drink. Conjured items disappear if logged out for more than 15 minutes.

Polymorph · level 8, 4 ranks
Takes one extra enemy out of the pull.
Transforms the enemy into a sheep, forcing it to wander around for up to 50 sec. While wandering, the sheep cannot attack or cast spells but will regenerate very quickly. Any damage will transform the target back into its normal form. Only one target can be polymorphed at a time. Only works on Beasts, Humanoids and Critters.
The pull
- Buff Frost or Ice Armor and Ice Barrier, with full mana.
- Gather the pack by running past each enemy so it follows you.
- When they are bunched behind you, turn and Frost Nova.
- Step out of melee range (Blink if needed) and channel Blizzard over them.
- When the Nova breaks, keep channeling: Improved Blizzard and Permafrost keep them slow.
- If they reach you, Cone of Cold, step back and channel again; Frost Nova again when it is back (Cold Snap resets it).
- Finish the last enemies with Arcane Explosion or Cone of Cold.
- Pulling
- Run through the pack's area, close enough that each enemy notices you, and keep moving so they line up behind you. Stop gathering once you have as many as your mana can kill: four to six at first, eight or more with gear and practice.
- Grouping
- Keep running in one direction until they are all behind you in a tight line, then turn. Frost Nova only once the last one has caught up.
- Positioning
- Pick open ground: walls, trees and buildings block Blizzard and stop you backing away. Kite away from other packs, never towards them.
- Crowd control
- Frost Nova and Cone of Cold hold the pack; Polymorph removes one extra enemy; Counterspell stops a stray caster.
- Defensives
- Ice Barrier before every pull, Ice Block when health drops low with the pack still alive, Blink to escape melee range, Mana Shield in an emergency.
- Mana and health
- Use the Blizzard rank that kills the pack: lower ranks cost less mana for the same slow at lower levels. Drink conjured water between pulls and keep Evocation and a mana gem for long fights.
Common mistakes
- Pulling casters or ranged enemies: they stand outside the Blizzard and interrupt it
- Turning before the whole pack has caught up, so the Nova misses some
- Kiting into the next pack
- Starting a pull without full mana or with Ice Block on cooldown
Gear and consumables
- Gear
- Stamina first, so a pull's last seconds don't kill you, then Intellect for longer pulls. Spell damage helps from the 40s on. A good wand helps finish single enemies cheaply.
- Stats
- Stamina and Intellect while leveling; spell damage and frost damage from the 40s on. Spirit matters less than Intellect because you drink between pulls anyway.
- Enchants
- Stamina and Intellect enchants on chest and bracers; a speed enchant on boots makes kiting safer.
Greater Mana PotionMana for a long pull in the 40s.
Superior Mana PotionThe same at 50 and up.
Superior Healing PotionHealth when a pull goes wrong.
Frost OilOn a weapon: chance to cast Frostbolt on hit, an extra slow.
Swiftness PotionRun out of a pull that has gone bad.

Torn Fin murlocs on Hillsbrad's west coast
Hillsbrad Foothills · Levels 28–32
EasyTorn Fin Coastrunners and Muckdwellers along Hillsbrad's western shore: melee-only murlocs at levels 28–30, close together on open sand, the first good mage AoE pulls after Blizzard ranks up.
- Spawn points

- Respawn

- Coin per kill
- 51 copper
- Vendor loot per kill
- 1 silver 49 copper
Creatures
- Torn Fin CoastrunnerLevels 29–30 · 28 spawns
- Torn Fin MuckdwellerLevels 28–29 · 19 spawns
Pros
- Melee only: every murloc follows you into the Blizzard
- Open beach with room to kite
- Clams and fish oil add a little vendor value
Cons
- Murlocs move fast and call friends, so pulls grow by themselves
- Low money per kill
- Requires:
- Blizzard, Frost Nova and Cone of Cold; Improved Blizzard makes the pulls safe.
- Competition:
- A common Horde and Alliance leveling coast: other players thin the packs at busy times.
How to farm it, step by step
- 1.Where to stand: Start at one end of the strand with open sand behind you, so you can walk back while channeling.
- 2.Pull: Run along the waterline through the Coastrunners and Muckdwellers until four to eight are following you.
- 3.Group them up: Turn and walk back the way you came so they line up behind you; turn to face them once they are within a few yards of each other.
- 4.Abilities: Frost Nova as they bunch up, step out of melee range, then channel Blizzard over the pack; Improved Blizzard and Permafrost keep them crawling through it. Cone of Cold and a second Frost Nova (after its cooldown or Cold Snap) cover the last seconds. At these levels, a lower Blizzard rank costs less mana for the same slow.
- 5.Kite: If the Nova breaks early, walk back along the open beach and Cone of Cold the front of the pack before channeling again.
- 6.Finish: Arcane Explosion or a last Cone of Cold finishes murlocs below a quarter of their health.
- 7.Recover: Drink conjured water and eat between pulls; save Evocation and a mana gem for a pull that runs long. Rebuff Frost or Ice Armor and Ice Barrier before the next pull.
- 8.Avoid: Torn Fin Oracles and Tidehunters further east along the coast cast spells; keep the pull to the melee murlocs here.

Pros
- Open fields with long sight lines
- Melee only
- Silk cloth on about 30% of kills
Cons
- Respawn is slower here (about 6½ minutes)
- Militia hit a little harder than the laborers
- Requires:
- Improved Blizzard; Arctic Reach helps cover the field.
How to farm it, step by step
- 1.Where to stand: Start on the field's edge furthest from the farmhouse so the pull walks away from the buildings.
- 2.Pull: Run through the laborers in the fields until five to eight follow you.
- 3.Group them up: Loop once around the edge of the field to bunch them, then face the pack.
- 5.Kite: Kite along the open field; fence lines and the farmhouse are the only obstacles.
- 6.Finish: Arcane Explosion when they reach you at low health.
- 7.Recover: Drink conjured water and eat between pulls; save Evocation and a mana gem for a pull that runs long. Rebuff Frost or Ice Armor and Ice Barrier before the next pull.
- 8.Avoid: Nothing else hostile stands in the farm; just keep pulls away from the buildings so you don't snag a second group.

- 2.Pull: Tag raptors one at a time as you run past, aiming for four to six.
- 3.Group them up: Raptors run fast, so turn and Frost Nova as soon as the last one closes in.

- 3.Group them up: Lead them off the hill onto open ground before turning.

- 5.Kite: Kite downhill and away from the next graves.
- 6.Finish: Arcane Explosion or Holy Wrath.
- 7.Recover: Drink conjured water and eat between pulls; save Evocation and a mana gem for a pull that runs long. Rebuff Frost or Ice Armor and Ice Barrier before the next pull.
- 8.Avoid: Skeletal Sorcerers are casters; pull them alone, or not at all.
