Legacy: The Hall of Thanes is part of the “Novice Spelunker” challenge, worth 1 Legacy Point for your account. Legacy challenges

Overview

Old Ironforge, the sealed halls beneath the city where the thanes of old lie entombed. Dark Iron dwarves have dug their way in to loot the tombs, and their digging has woken the dead: restless spirits, a fire elemental and the halls' stone guardians stand between you and the Dark Iron leader, Durgen Dirgehammer.

How to get there

The portal is in Old Ironforge, below the city. From the High Seat, take the cobwebbed passage on the left of the throne room and follow it down into the old halls.

Alliance

Start in Kharanos with Beldin Steelgrill's A Visitor to Dun Morogh. Earthseer Farsen's chain leads to Old Ironforge Incursion, the run's main quest, which King Magni Bronzebeard takes in. Afadra Dunwall and Thom Filch give two more quests in Ironforge on the way down.

Horde

The portal lies past King Magni's throne in a guarded Alliance capital, so Horde groups have to fight or sneak through Ironforge. Most of the quests are for the Alliance; An Ancient Grudge, given by a ghost inside the dungeon, is open to both factions.

Requirements & attunements

No key or attunement. Built for levels 13–18.

Bosses

  1. Faldrim Anvilmar

    • Anvilmar's Curse

The thane's restless spirit, waiting in his tomb with apparitions around it. Clear those first, then tank him where he stands. Anvilmar's Curse turns the tank's skin to stone: attacks and casts slow down, though poisons and bleeds stop working on them. Remove it, and interrupt his shadow blasts.

    • Item level 18 · Neck · Requires level 13
    • Item level 18 · Back · Cloth · Requires level 13
  2. Magmatus

    • Combust

A fire elemental that arrives with a Dark Iron Summoner. Kill the summoner first while the tank holds Magmatus away from the group: he pulses fire around himself, and Combust burns its target with more fire damage over the following seconds, so healers should watch whoever it lands on.

    • Item level 18 · Waist · Mail · Requires level 13
  3. Plunder

A stone golem guarding his own hallway. Clear the packs along it, pull him alone and drag him back into the tunnel you came from. Knock Away hurls players across the room, so stand where a throw can't land you in another pack.

    Loot · Plunder

    • Item level 18 · Chest · Mail · Requires level 13
    • Item level 18 · Feet · Mail · Requires level 13
  4. Durgen Dirgehammer

The Dark Iron leader, with two Lesser Stone Golems at his side. Clear the Dark Iron looters along the walls first but leave the golems, which fight with him. He fears the group and makes the tank bleed: keep a fear break or Fear Ward for the tank and heal through the bleed. His head is the objective of Old Ironforge Incursion.

Tips & preparation

  • Clear the apparitions around Faldrim's tomb before you pull him, so you fight him on his own.
  • Kill the Dark Iron Summoner that comes with Magmatus first, and keep Magmatus facing away from the group.
  • Pull Plunder back into a cleared corridor: Knock Away throws players a long way, and landing in another pack can wipe the group.
  • Bring curse removal for Anvilmar's Curse, which slows the tank's attacks.
