Fix WoW Classic addon problems — Addons · WoW Classic

Start with the problem you see. Each fix goes from the quickest check to the last resort, and says when to back up your settings first.

An addon isn't in the AddOns list

You installed an addon, but the AddOns list at the character list doesn't show it.

How to fix it

  1. Close the game and open _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns: the addon's folder must be right there.
  2. Move any folder nested inside another up one level, so each folder holds its .toc file directly.
  3. Extract the archive instead of copying the zip.
  4. Start the game again and open AddOns at the character list.
  5. Check the addon's page for WoW Classic: if it has no WoW Classic file, it can't run here.

Common causes

  • It's in another game version's folder (for example _retail_ instead of _classic_era_).
  • There's an extra folder in between: AddOns/Questie-main/Questie instead of AddOns/Questie.
  • The download is still a zip file, or only its first folder was copied.
  • The game was running while you installed it.
  • The addon has no file for WoW Classic at all, so the game ignores it.

Narrow it down

  • Open the addon's folder: a .toc file named like the folder must be inside it, not in a folder below.

An addon says Out of date

The AddOns list shows the addon in red or with Out of date, and it doesn't load.

How to fix it

  1. Update the addon: in your manager, or by downloading the newest WoW Classic file from its page.
  2. Make sure the manager is set to WoW Classic, not another game version.
  3. If no update exists yet and your AddOns list has Load out of date AddOns, ticking it loads the addon anyway. It may work or throw errors: untick it once the author updates.

Common causes

  • A game patch raised WoW Classic's addon version number and the addon hasn't been updated since.
  • The file you have was made for another game version.

An addon shows Lua errors

A window with a Lua error appears, or the addon stops working without a message.

Back up firstBack up WTF before deleting any settings file.More

How to fix it

  1. Show the errors: type /console scriptErrors 1 in chat (and /console scriptErrors 0 to hide them again).
  2. Read the first lines of the error: they name the addon's folder. Update that addon first.
  3. Disable every other addon and /reload. If the error is gone, turn the others back on a few at a time to find the one it clashes with.
  4. If it only happens with old settings, reset that addon's profile (or its SavedVariables file, after a backup).
  5. Still there? Report it on the addon's page with the full error text and your game version.

Common causes

  • The addon isn't updated for the latest WoW Classic patch.
  • Two addons change the same part of the interface.
  • Its saved settings are from an older version and no longer fit.

An addon is enabled but does nothing

The addon is ticked in the AddOns list, but nothing appears in game.

How to fix it

  1. Check the AddOns list for Dependency missing and install the addon it names.
  2. Set the list's character menu to All characters, tick it, and log in again.
  3. Open its options (its slash command on the addon page) and look for an enable or show option.
  4. Type /reload to reload the interface after any change.

Common causes

  • It needs another addon (the AddOns list shows Dependency missing).
  • It's enabled for another character only.
  • It's hidden or turned off in its own options.
  • It works only in certain places (a boss mod in a raid, a PvP addon in a battleground).

There's no AddOns folder

_classic_era_/Interface/AddOns doesn't exist, or you can't find the game folder at all.

How to fix it

  1. Use Battle.net's Show in Explorer (Show in Finder on a Mac) with WoW Classic selected to open the real game folder.
  2. Open _classic_era_. If Interface or AddOns is missing, create them with exactly these names.
  3. Install an addon there and restart the game.

Common causes

  • The folder appears only after the first addon is installed.
  • The game is installed somewhere other than the default folder.
  • You're looking in another game version's folder.

Addons installed in the wrong folder

Addons were copied into the wrong place, so the game never sees them.

How to fix it

  1. Close the game and move the addon folders into _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns.
  2. Set your manager to WoW Classic and reinstall from there.
  3. Restart the game and check the AddOns list.

Common causes

  • World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns, the folder very old clients used, instead of _classic_era_/Interface/AddOns.
  • Another game version's folder, such as _retail_.
  • A manager set to another game version.

Addons disappeared or stopped after an update

After a game patch or a reinstall, addons are gone, marked Out of date, or their settings are back to default.

Back up firstCopy both the old and the new folder's WTF before copying anything over.More

How to fix it

  1. Update every addon; then untick nothing and check the AddOns list.
  2. If the folders were renamed with a date by Scan and Repair, close the game and rename them back to Interface and WTF.
  3. If the game now runs from a new folder, copy Interface and WTF from the old one into _classic_era_ with the game closed.
  4. Restore WTF from a backup if settings were lost.

Common causes

  • The patch raised the addon version number, so older files are marked Out of date (they're still installed).
  • The game moved to a new folder (a beta client's folder to the live one, or a new install location).
  • WTF was replaced or reset, which resets settings but leaves the addons.
  • Battle.net's Scan and Repair renamed the Interface and WTF folders, adding a date to their names.

Resetting addon settings

An addon (or your whole interface) is misbehaving and you want to start its settings over.

Back up firstRenaming instead of deleting keeps a way back: rename the folders back to restore them. Close addon managers first, or they may put files back.More

How to fix it

  1. One addon: use its own Reset or Profiles option first; that's the safest.
  2. If its options won't open: close the game and delete its <Addon>.lua files in the SavedVariables folders under WTF.
  3. Everything (Blizzard's own reset): close the game and any addon manager, then in _classic_era_ rename Cache, Interface and WTF to CacheOld, InterfaceOld and WTFOld. The game starts with default settings and no addons.

Common causes

  • Settings saved by an older version of the addon.
  • A profile changed into something broken.
  • Several addons' layouts clashing.

Finding conflicting addons

Something breaks only with certain addons together: frames overlap, buttons vanish, errors appear.

How to fix it

  1. Use one addon per job: one action bar addon, one bag addon, one boss mod.
  2. Disable half of your addons and /reload. If the problem is gone, the culprit is in that half; keep halving until one addon is left.
  3. Re-enable the rest and check that addon's options for the feature that clashes.

Common causes

  • Two addons doing the same job (two action bar, bag or unit frame addons, or both boss mods).
  • An addon replacing part of the interface another one changes.

Broken or missing addon profiles

An addon shows default settings on one character, or a profile change ruined the layout.

Back up firstCopy WTF before restoring an older file over the current one.More

How to fix it

  1. Open the addon's Profiles options and choose the profile you set up (often Default).
  2. Use Copy From to bring settings over from a good profile.
  3. Restore the addon's SavedVariables file from a WTF backup, with the game closed.

Common causes

  • The character uses its own profile instead of the shared one.
  • A profile was reset or copied over by mistake.
